Gift or trap

Gift or trap: trap

Not every bonus is a trap, and not every bonus is a gift. The picture shows a trap. A trap: the turnover does not fit into your life, the minimum odds push you out of your markets, the max bet cuts below 1 unit (a standard stake, usually 1% of the bankroll), the deadline is tight and your unit jumps. A gift: small turnover, your own markets, 1 unit intact, and turning it down does not hurt. The school teaches refusal as a skill, not as cynicism.

Gift or trap in plain words

A trap works on FOMO and on the lure of “something for nothing”. A beginner deposits more, bets more often, takes accumulators and breaks their limit. The bookmaker profits from the turnover, even if the token (a bonus bet placed without your own money) sometimes pays out. A fair offer does not require you to become a different person. It comes on top of a deposit you had already planned and a match you already understand.

How it works

Four filters: (1) turnover in units ≤ the number of calm singles you can place within the deadline; (2) minimum odds within your usual range; (3) max bet ≥ 1 unit of cash; (4) the reason for depositing is not the banner. Three yeses and one no: usually skip. Zero yeses: definitely skip. Four yeses: you may take it, as an extra, not as a celebration.

  1. Say the four filters out loud.
  2. One no leans towards skip.
  3. Do not argue with the banner in the comments.
  4. Record the decision.

Example with numbers

Offer A: a token of 5, WR ×3, minimum odds 1.70, max 50, expiry 14 days. Bankroll 200, 1 unit = 2. All filters are green. Offer B: 100% up to 200, ×35 on bonus plus deposit, minimum odds 2.20, max 10, expiry 7 days. With 1 unit = 2, a max of 10 breaks flat staking, and the turnover is 14,000 on a deposit of 200. A trap with a big number. The number on the banner is not a filter.

Common mistakes

  • Big number = big gift.
  • Walking into a trap because “I'm disciplined”.
  • Being ashamed of a skip.
  • Treating a refusal as lost EV: often the refusal is the EV.

What to write in your diary

Offer: the four filters, yes or no. The decision in one line.

Value. Next: bonus and bankroll.
