Hedging with a second bookmaker

Hedging with a second bookmaker: 1.40 and 3.20

A hedge means buying the opposite door to narrow the range of outcomes. The picture shows 1.40 and 3.20. Sometimes it repairs a mistake. Sometimes it is an attempt at arbitrage where no real arbitrage exists. A beginner hears "guaranteed profit" and gets a guaranteed cut from two margins. The school does not build income on hedging. It shows when a hedge is an exit and when it is just noise.

Hedging with a second bookmaker, in plain words

Hedging with a second bookmaker makes sense if the risk on your bet slip has become wrong (team news, the wrong market) and cashing out would be even worse. It makes no sense as a plan for every favourite, because two margins eat the gap. Dutching and middles are separate glossary terms, not a Friday life hack.

How it works

Work it out on paper: how much do you need to stake on the other side to come out at about zero? If reaching zero takes a stake larger than 1u, you are no longer flat staking. In that case, cash out or sit tight. Do not hedge "just a little" without doing the maths.

  1. Why hedge: repair or greed?
  2. Work out the size of the second leg.
  3. If it breaks flat staking, do not do it.
  4. Two rows in the diary.

Example with numbers

Home win at [email protected], and news has broken your p. The away side is 4.00 at another bookmaker. To come out at about zero, the second leg needs to be ~45–50. The result is around −5 to −10 because of the margin, not a "guaranteed profit". That is the price of getting out. It is more honest than taking revenge in-play with 3u.

Common mistakes

  • Hedging as a way of life.
  • Not calculating the second leg.
  • Believing a hedge at the same bookmaker at a fat in-play price is always "smart".
  • Confusing a hedge with a new value bet.

What to write in your diary

Two rows, a hedge tag, and the goal "exit", not "profit".

Hedge, surebet. Next: bet slip practice.
