Lesson 4 of 12 · 4 min
xG: expected is not a goal
xG is an estimate of the quality of chances, expressed in goals. The picture shows 1.8. A team with an xG of 1.8 "deserved" roughly that many goals; it does not mean "they will score 2 today". The model differs from one website to another, and penalties, own goals and tiny samples all affect it. The school uses xG as a way to describe the game, not as a button for betting on totals. The bookmaker can see public xG figures too.
"xG: expected is not a goal" in plain words
Expected goals do not magically predict this match. They compress a team's shots into a single number. A high xG with few goals means underperformance: it may regress, or it may be down to a goalkeeper or the woodwork, or the model may misread the team's style. A low xG with many goals means overperformance. For totals, what matters is how teams create chances, not just the table of goals scored over five rounds.
How it works
Look at xG for and xG against over a run of games, home and away, not in a single match. Compare it with the total in the line: if both teams create about 1.6 each, under 2.5 may be harsh or it may be fair. You need your own p, not "xG says bet". Do not add two xG figures together into "there will be 3.2 goals today" as if it were a law. The Poisson entry in the glossary describes a model, not an oracle.
- Use xG for and against, not a single match.
- Split by home and away.
- Link it to your question (total / 1X2).
- Do not click "because of xG" without a p.
Example with numbers
The home side has an xG for of 1.7 and against of 1.1 at home. The away side has 1.2 / 1.5 on the road. The line for over 2.5 is 1.90. The narrative says "it will be an open game". Your question was the under, because both sides sit deep. xG argues with your question, so the question is under pressure, but it is not automatically dead. Either set a new p or skip. Do not let "xG buy the total for you".
| Number | Means | Does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| xG 1.8 for the match | chances worth ~1.8 goals | 2 goals today |
| 4 goals, xG 1.1 | overperformance | always on fire |
| Two xG figures summing to 3 | rough map of the tempo | a law of 3-0 |
Common mistakes
- Betting over because "xG is high".
- Treating xG from one game as a whole season.
- Ignoring penalties in xG.
- Treating your own model, or someone else's website, as the truth.
