Lesson 8 of 12 · 4 min
Limits as a signal
A limit is how much the bookmaker is willing to take from you on a particular market. The picture shows a cap scale. A max of 500 with 1u = 100 is a live market. A max of 5 after a tick means you have been pushed out. It is not an insult; it simply says "this price is not for your size". The school does not teach you to get round limits with ten accounts. That breaks KYC and the whole 18+ framework.
Limits as a signal in plain words
Limits are a useful signal even for a beginner, because they show whether the price on the screen is real. 1.99 with a max of 5 is a shop window. 1.91 with a max of 200 is a product. Line shopping without checking the max is just comparing shop windows. The odds course already introduced fill; here fill is part of reading the line, not a sign of greed.
How it works
Check the max before you click. If the max is below 1u, you are not in the market: either you reduce your stake (which is no longer flat staking), use another bookmaker, or skip. Do not split 1u into 20 bets of 5 "to build it up". The bookmaker can see it, and you fill your diary with noise.
- Note the price and the max.
- Compare the max with 1u.
- Use another bookmaker or skip.
- Do not open multiple accounts.
Example with numbers
Price 1.95, max 8, 1u = 100. You do not take 8 and call it 1u. Another bookmaker offers 1.90 with a max of 300: that is fill. Giving up 0.05 on a full unit is worth more than "almost 1.95" on a stake of eight. Diary entry: fill [email protected].
| Screen | Max | For 1u = 100 |
|---|---|---|
| 1.95 | 8 | not a market |
| 1.90 | 300 | take it |
| 1.99 | 5 | shop window |
Common mistakes
- Getting round limits through family members and a VPN.
- Calling a stake of 5 "the same odds".
- Getting angry with the bookmaker: it does not owe you liquidity.
- Confusing a market limit with a responsible gambling deposit limit.
What to write in your diary
A max column. If it is empty, you do not know whether the product was really there.
Max stake, limits. Next: CLV over a week.
18+ only. This is a lesson, not a tip or a call to bet. Bonulist is an editorial guide to licensed bookmakers; we do not take bets.
